🥳We coming back to London! Join us.
Last year, All Tech Is Human expanded (we are based in NYC) our in-person gatherings to London. This attracted hundreds of individuals and built up a significant amount of enthusiasm. Our gathering last December brought together 250 people across 17 countries and helped break down silos across civil society, government, industry, and academia. So, we’re coming back! Meet us there.
👋Please join us (through our application form) as we curate another broad mix of 250 people to come together at The Royal Society in London. Sponsored by the LEGO Group in collaboration with The Royal Society’s Data and Digital Technologies policy team (whose work is focused on disinformation, AI, privacy, and inclusive technology).
✔️Some of the topics we will be diving into include:
Creating healthy online spaces for youth
Ensuring technologies like AI promote the best interests of the child
The role of industry in enhancing digital wellbeing
There will be two panels, a mixer, and ample opportunity to connect and share with experts across all sectors. Later on, we will have panel videos and a post-gathering summary report with key takeaways and actionable advice for all stakeholders. Apply today or let us know if there are people and orgs that you think should be involved!
✍️Pre and post-gathering, join over 500 people in our London channel inside our large Slack community (sign in | apply) and hundreds more in our European channel.
📜Read our new Responsible AI Governance Hackathon Report
We're delighted to release Responsible AI Governance Maturity Model, a new report based on our 2024 Hackathon supported by The Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab!
The Responsible AI Governance Maturity Model is a framework for evaluating the social responsibility of AI governance in organizations that develop or use AI systems, based on the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. When used internally, the model is intended to help organizations diagnose where they stand and improve. When used externally, e.g., by investors, buyers, or consumers, the model is intended to inform decision-making about the company and its products.
The goal of the hackathon was to bring diverse perspectives into the development of the model, and, at the same time, provide AI ethics education and networking opportunities. During the hackathon, participants practiced AI ethics skills and used the maturity model to evaluate either their own company using internal information or any other company using public information. The hackathon was a great success, with 250 registrants, 180 active participants, and 54 submitted evaluations.
🧠Interested in learning more about the report with the organizers and participants? We’re hosting a livestream this Friday, April 19, at 12pm ET. Join Rebekah Tweed (Executive Director, All Tech Is Human), Ravit Dotan (Founder & CEO, BetterTech), Borhane Blili-Hamelin (Hackathon Organizer), and Carol Anderson (Hackathon Organizer).
🗽Live from New York…it’s The Future of Trust & Safety!
Isn’t it time we talk about The Future of Trust & Safety?! We certainly think so. That’s why we are curating a multistakeholder gathering of 200 individuals on May 14th in NYC for two panel conversations, a mixer, and opportunities to learn from each. This allows us to surface values, tensions, trade-offs, and best practices in order to strengthen the field of Trust & Safety. Apply here.
📣Our first panel, Cultivating the Next Generation of Trust & Safety Leaders, will have speakers share career advice, challenges they face, how tech policy influences Trust and Safety operations, and reflections on the future of Trust & Safety. Panelists include Eirliani Abdul Rahman (Former Twitter Council member & doctoral student, Harvard University), Alexis Crews (Founder, E∙NOUGH Consulting), Jacob Silver (Senior Data & Implementation Officer, Oversight Board, and will be moderated by Sandra Khalil (All Tech Is Human Trust and Safety Lead & Head of Partnerships).
We’ll announce our second panel in the next newsletter…stay tuned.
👍Attendees who have registered so far come from orgs such as the ADL Center for Technology and Society, Common Sense Media, Countering Digital Hate, Institute for Security and Technology, Integrity Institute, Oversight Board, Web Foundation, and multilateral organizations such as the UN and UNICEF. Companies include Graphika, Meta, Google, Naver Z, and many more.
🚶♂️Curious about how people build a career in Trust & Safety?! Read about Matt Soeth’s journey!
Matt Soeth (All Tech Is Human Head of Trust and Safety & Global Policy) wrote about his personal career journey to highlight the non-linear nature of the profession to aspiring and emerging Trust & Safety professionals. The piece includes 10 key tips and also a list of resources for those building a career in Trust & Safety.
“Not all great careers in tech start in tech. Think about tech-adjacent pathways. If you’re having a hard time breaking into Trust & Safety consider roles at orgs that tech platforms often collaborate with when it comes to policy, platform tooling, research, and so forth. There are a ton of great roles where you get to work directly with platforms in an advisory capacity. This is a great way to build content expertise in issue areas like hate speech, child safety, media literacy, or suicide and self-harm. Or, you can build your knowledge of tooling and reporting workflows through research and collaboration as a service provider. There are many ways to get to the same destination.” - Matt Soeth

📝Learnings from our Journalist Roundtable
All Tech Is Human recently brought together eleven journalists for a candid in-person conversation about the state of tech reporting. Our organization views journalism as a key lever for change in Responsible Tech. For our roundtable, Sara M. Watson (All Tech Is Human's Siegel Family Endowment Research Fellow) facilitated a group discussion on how our organization can support journalists in the tech industry, with a focus on the challenges and opportunities in covering emerging tech.
Participating NYC-based journalists shared recent work they were proud of and connected with other tech journalists. The group also aired the challenges, blockages, and constraints they face when covering complex tech and society issues, including:
Tech layoffs and sources
Media layoffs and resources
Shifting platform landscape
Reverse engineering reporting
In this write-up, Sara shares key ideas that came out of the discussion and ideal next steps! Check it out.
