NYC Mixer, Explainer Video, Office Hours and more!
We're busy building out activities to grow and support the Responsible Tech ecosystem.
đIf you are in the NYC area, come say hello to us on March 2nd.
Remember people? You know, being in the same room together. Smiling. Laughing. Hatching plans to build a better tech future. Well, we certainly hope you can join us on Wed, March 2nd as we host a casual Responsible Tech Mixer from 5:30 to 7:30 pm in Manhattan. Youâll be surprised by just how many different types of people are committed to the same thing you are. Sign-up below, and weâll send you a calendar invite with the exact location from Hello / AllTechIsHuman.org. David Ryan Polgar and Cate Gwin from the All Tech Is Human team will be in attendance.
At our mixer, we will be hearing from some of our collaborating orgs for the Responsible Tech NYC initiative we are spearheading. Oh, and weâll have some exciting updates about that initiative in the next newsletterâŚand donât worry, weâll be having online mixers in the coming weeks, along with some additional locations.
â¨âSo, what is All Tech Is Human?â Well, we made an explainer video to answer that burning question.
Here at All Tech Is Human, we unite a diverse range of stakeholders to co-create a better tech future; one aligned with the public interest. All of our activities are aimed at building the Responsible Tech ecosystem, bringing new voices into the field, and being able to tackle thorny tech & society issues.
You know, we have never been an A-to-B type of organization; instead, we have been focused on various parts of the ecosystem that can grow the overall Responsible Tech movement and provides pathways for new people to enter. Ever since our inaugural âethical tech summitâ in NYC in 2018, we have noticed just how many people wanted to be part of the process but didnât have a way in. Thatâs why we created our Responsible Tech Guide and mentorship program. Thatâs also why our large working groups are open to everyone; itâs not just about creating a resource, but providing an environment for learning and community.
In other words, All Tech Is Human is powered by people and focused on people.
đ˘For additional support, try out our new office hours.
All Tech Is Human is excited to offer Community Office Hours! This is an opportunity to speak one-on-one with our newest team member, Cate Gwin who is largely responsible for assisting our organization with knowledge and community management as we grow our large community Slack group. What to discuss? Community Office Hours can be helpful to learning more about All Tech Is Human; to connect to say hello; to ask questions about our Slack group, reports, working groups, providing constructive feedback, etc. Just donât hit us up with pitches about your startup or any other commercial activity.
đĽThank you to everyone who tuned into our recent livestream.
All Tech Is Human was joined by Tami Bhaumik (Vice President, Civility and Partnerships at Roblox), and Avriel Epps-Darling (computational social scientist, PhD student in Human Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education) on February 9th to discuss how we can align our tech future with our human experience. This followed the recent release of our HX Report: Aligning Our Tech Future With Our Human Experience that we hope you have had the chance to read.
đď¸Our HX (Human Experience) Report continues to gain traction.
In our HX Report, we used the analogy of a Rubikâs Cube when looking at the various stakeholders and issues that influence each other when trying to better align our tech future with our human experience. This is a complex issue that requires greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Each week, we will be highlighting some of the over 100 organizations listed in the HX Report along with what weâre learning from the 45 interviews and our large working group.
If you would like to continue the discussion around HX, please join our new HX channel on our community Slack group. Read and download the HX Report and check out the quote graphics we made. To follow along with the larger HX movement, stay in touch with HXproject.org
đThe Responsible Tech community is gathering in Washington DC on March 23rd and weâre part of it.
All Tech Is Human is collaborating with our friends at Digital Void to have a Responsible Tech Mixer and a panel conversation on Wed, March 23rd. Founder & Director David Ryan Polgar will be moderating a discussion around HX and how we can improve our tech future with special guest Afua Bruce, author of The Tech That Comes Next! An additional panelist will be announced in the next newsletter. This is all part of Our Connected Future, which is shaping up to be quite a night.
Outside of the panel, there is also a fireside chat with Ryan Grimm (The Intercept, Young Turks) and a live podcast taping of the critically-acclaimed There Are No Girls on the Internet with Bridget Todd! Oh, and this is all happening at a music venue. If you are looking to meet others, be part of some stimulating conversation, and perhaps laugh a little, this is for you.
đ¸ď¸Curious what weâre talking about on our community Slack group? We just created an overview page.
There is a lot happening on our community Slack, whether itâs finding out about events or jobs, debating the latest news, sharing resources, or discovering people in the ecosystem that live nearby. On our new overview page for the community Slack group, we list out all of the channels that fall under four key categories: Community, Interests, Location, and Action.
đśď¸Why are we optimists? Because we keep on finding cool new jobs focused on building a better tech future.
Our Responsible Tech Job Board keep on growing, which is a unique curation of roles related to reducing the harms of technology, diversifying the tech pipeline, and ensuring that technology is aligned with the public interest. Check out roles such as Public Interest Tech (PiTech) Initiative Director at Cornell Tech, Associate Director Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab, Managing Director - Algorithmic Justice League, Program Manager - #ShareTheMicInCyber - New America, and Program Director - Rebooting Social Media, Harvard Berkman Klein Center.
đOur tech future is about people, not just technology.
