Our new HX Report is out! Aligning Our Tech Future With Our Human Experience

alltechishuman.substack.com

👋We just released our HX Report and it’s pretty damn good. We hope you download it.

Yeah, this report was a lot of work. We brought together a broad working group of over 150 people from various backgrounds and perspectives, conducted 45 profile interviews, and curated resources from over 100 organizations related to the emerging concept of HX (Human Experience); “HX is an approach to talking about, engaging with, and designing technology in a way that is aligned with our needs as humans — not users.” -HXproject.org.

The HX Report features interviews with students, academics, org leaders, startup founders, people working at large tech companies, and more. Our interviewees come from New_Public, Center for Humane Technology, the World Economic Forum, Roblox, TikTok, Microsoft, Discord, Grindr, Consumer Reports, Soliya, Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop, the Integrity Institute, and more. Check out quote graphics from all of the interviews here.

We see this as just a start, as we seek to better understand the various opinions, concerns, and opportunities to collectively tackle thorny tech & society issues that require a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach. The reports utilizes a Rubik’s Cube analogy to illustrate the interconnected themes related to maximizing our HX and improving our tech future, and how each of these parts affect one another. You will always be able to find the most up-to-date report at HXreport.org

📺But wait, there’s more….we’re having a livestream on Wed, Feb 9th at 1pm ET to discuss HX.

🤔Did you think we’d just be celebrating from the release of our HX Report and stay quiet for awhile? Nah. We’re not skipping a beat, as we continue the conversation around HX and better aligning our tech future with our human experience.

We’re thrilled to welcome our livestream Avriel Epps-Darling (computational social scientist, PhD student in Human Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education) and Tami Bhaumik (Vice President, Civility and Partnerships at Roblox). We’d love for you to send in your questions, as we’ll be incorporating them into the livestream. You can submit those directly through the event sign-up.

If you are new to All Tech Is Human, you can check out some of our previous livestreams here. We have been fortunate to have had a stellar group of previous guests, including Safiya Noble, Yael Eisenstat, Timnit Gerbru, Meredith Broussard, Charlton McIlwain, Rumman Chowdhury, Mutale Nkonde, Sarah T. Roberts, Jasmine McNealy, Claire Wardle, and many more.

🥂All Tech Is Human is planning a Responsible Tech Mixer for Wed, March 23rd in Washington DC.

Our organization is collaborating with our friends from Digital Void on an exciting event in Washington DC that is shaping up to be a Responsible Tech Festival of sorts…it’s called Our Connected Future.

There will be a Responsible Tech Mixer, a fireside chat, a panel conversation, and a live podcast taping…taking place at a cool music venue in our nation’s capital. All Tech Is Human founder & director David Ryan Polgar will be moderating a panel around HX and better aligning our tech future with the human experience, with the panelists to be announced shortly. Put this event in your calendar now; tickets become available through the venue website on Friday.

If you’re in the DC area and would will be at the mixer, let us know! Drop a line to David / AllTechIsHuman.org and tell him know you’ll be there to say hello.

👩‍💻Okay, enough talk of having fun. If you’re looking for a job in the Responsible Tech ecosystem, we have you covered.

Our Responsible Tech Job Board is a unique curation of roles focused on reducing the harms of technology, diversifying the tech pipeline, and ensuring that technology is aligned with the public interest. We now have 263 roles on the job board, covering a mix of entry-level, fellowships, and more senior-level roles with universities, large tech companies, think tanks, startups, and more.

We just added roles from Knight First Amendment Institute, Headstream (SecondMuse), Foundation for Inclusion, New_ Public, Hugging Face, Twitter, Notre Dame-IBM Technology Ethics Lab, Roblox, and many more!

🦄 Our community Slack group is quickly turning into a social network for the Responsible Tech ecosystem.

👍Started 14 months ago, our community Slack group has now surpassed 2.5k members. Now that we’re growing our team at All Tech Is Human, we are expanding and improving this unique space for a diverse range of individuals from various backgrounds and perspectives who are coming together over a shared interest in co-creating a better tech future.

What is happening is somewhat magical (hence the unicorn). People are finding jobs, connecting with others in their respective cities, learning about valuable resources, and much more. While we seemingly have a lot of different projects here at All Tech Is Human, they are all related to creating a better sense of community, along with promoting knowledge-sharing & collaboration. For example, Vivian Chong (MBA student at Yale School of Management) found additional teammates through our Slack community to take part in the recent John R. Lewis Racial Justice Case Competition. Spoiler alert, Vivian and her teammates took home the grand prize.

Magic happens when we bring people together.

Check our our brand-new channels for public interest technology, along with specific channels for those based in NYC, Washington DC, London, SF Bay Area, and the Boston/Cambridge area. If you’re ever having an issue with signing in, just ping us at Hello / AllTechIsHuman.org.

👍The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation just announced their significant commitment to building a better tech future. We’re happy to be one of their grantees.

“If we are to harness technology for better societal outcomes, we must start by building systems and tools that center equity in design and use. These grants support critical work: leveraging the use of government data for public welfare, improving data access for journalists and citizens, developing AI education initiatives for policymakers, and building educational systems that further digital inclusion and digital literacy. AI is transforming business already – civil society must advocate for how AI can transform humanity’s future for our shared benefit.”-Vilas Dhar, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation President
