👍We’re getting ready for our Youth, Tech, and Wellbeing gathering at the Australian Embassy in Washington on Aug 17

Here at All Tech Is Human, we specialize in uniting a broad range of stakeholders to co-create a better tech future. Along with elevating multidisciplinary Responsible Tech resources and diversifying the “tech pipeline” with a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences, these activities work in tandem to have a better-connected and expanded Responsible Tech ecosystem. Given how thorny the issues are we face, it is key to have a robust and collaborative Responsible Tech ecosystem.

On August 17th from 4-6pm, we will be having a panel + mixer gathering in Washington, DC at the Australian Embassy focused on Youth, Tech, and Wellbeing. This event will be bringing together a org leaders, youth advocates, researchers, Trust & Safety professionals, mental health professionals, and more. If you know of someone who should be involved, let us know through this interest form. We’re excited to announce two of our panelists, with an additional one being added shortly. Chanel Cornett, Counsel on the Trust & Safety team at Zoom, will be on stage with mental health advocate Arielle Geismar.

👩‍💻The future of tech is the future of democracy. On August 24th in NYC we are holding a mixer to explore careers at this important intersection.

A key part of our theory of change here at All Tech Is Human is that we can build a better tech future by improving the types of individuals involved in the process. “Technology” is not just for technologists; we need to inject the system with a far greater diversity of backgrounds and dispositions in order to better tech complex tech & society issues. We don’t just need problem-solvers, we need problem-finders that can better consider social impacts.

We are thrilled to partner with our friends at TheBridge and the Institute for Security and Technology for this super casual mixer for those involved or interested in careers at the intersection of technology and democracy. This can include tackling mis and disinformation, cybersecurity, online extremism, meme literacy, and more.

📅Mark your calendar! We are releasing our NEW Responsible Tech Guide on Sept 13th and you’re invited to celebrate

Our flagship resource for our non-profit is the Responsible Tech Guide, which we first released in September 2020 to help a broad range of stakeholders understand the nascent Responsible Tech ecosystem by showcasing the people, organizations, and ideas related to building a better tech future. Ever since we launched in 2018 and held our inaugural summit in NYC, we noticed that a diverse range of individuals wanted to get more involved but did not have clear pathways to be activated. There was a clear problem, which is why we developed this guide and perpetually expand and improve it. The guide currently has over 37k+ reads and has become a key resource that is bringing new voices into the movement.

On September 13th, we will be releasing our updated Responsible Tech Guide with the help of our volunteer summer cohort. And to celebrate, we will be having a large gathering in NYC hosted by an exciting new project called A Species Between Worlds. A month-long immersive exhibition A Species Between Worlds: Our Nature, Our Screens, is a gamified meditation examining the intersection of humanity and technology. Sparked by the Pokémon Go craze and a subsequent stampede in Taipei in 2016, artist and author John Mack has sought to explore the often slippery intersection of virtuality and reality through a technology-forward narrative arc that centers the individual and aims to foster balance and awareness between our technology and ourselves.

🤯Did you think we’d take the day off after our release party? Nah. We’re collaborating with the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop to build a better tech future for children.

We are thrilled to announce that on Wed, September 14th we are working alongside the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop to hold a panel + mixer gathering called Building a Better Tech Future for Children. This is happening in Manhattan from 4-6pm. Because of limited space, let us know about your interest and involvement related to youth/tech/wellbeing through our interest form.

We’ll be building on the work from our Improving Social Media report, along with our more recent HX Report: Aligning Our Tech Future With Our Human Experience (and related work with HXproject.org. We will also be incorporating learnings from our August 17th gathering at the Australian Embassy in Washington, along with some people and resources we will likely learn at our release party the night before!

🎙️We’re a part of this year’s Unfinished Live with the launch of our All Tech Is Human Library!

What is an All Tech Is Human Library you ask? It’s a “human library” of Responsible Tech leaders who will be interviewed live on stage (outfitted as a Responsible Tech library) over three days! All of the interviews are being recorded, which we will share out later on but we hope that you come over, watch, and say hello! The full team of David Ryan Polgar, Rebekah Tweed, Cate Gwin, and Karina Alexanyan will be there—along with a new program associate starting in mid-August!

All Tech Is Human is fortunate to be a part of the Unfinished Network, a “community of institutions working toward a more just future in technology, democracy, and the economy.” As a partner, we have the code ATIH50 that you can use for 50% off your ticket at Unfinished Live. It’s a multi-day gathering in NYC starting on Sept 22rd bringing together a Who’s Who across the Responsible Tech field.

📖Our AI and Human Rights: Building a Tech Future Aligned With the Public Interest continues to spread across the web

A big thank you to the 93 co-authors (!!) that brought our AI and Human Rights report to life, along with our subject matter expert Renée Cummings and lead Cate Gwin. And as a major benefit, outside of an impactful resource, is that everyone in the open working group comes away with greater experience and a more robust network. We absolutely love seeing the connections that happen when people across the globe (and from a variety of disciplines and level of experience) unite in collaboration.

📚Are you reading through the Responsible Tech Summer Reading List?!

In this picture, All Tech Is Human’s David Ryan Polgar is picking up the hypnotizing ETHICAL MACHINES by Reid Blackman, which is part of our Responsible Tech Summer Reading List that has curated 50 books to build a better tech future! If you have been reading one (or more) of the books on this list, send a picture of you and the book our way at Hello / AllTechIsHuman.org, where we will feature some pictures in our next newsletter.

👋 And hey, if you prefer to read some great articles, why don’t you check out this new piece for our Community Voices! Cassia Artanegara, UX Designer and Program Manager at Good Research, explores deceptive design practices while offering commentary around defining dark patterns, privacy controls, and shifting the burden from “users” to companies.
