👋Welcome back to All Tech Is Human’s bi-monthly newsletter! We’re glad you’re here, especially during a time of such disruption where coming together to collectively determine—and stand up for—our tech future is essential.
🧮In today’s newsletter, you’ll find numerous ways that you can add your voice to the Responsible Tech movement that All Tech Is Human has helped catalyze with years of field building to weave together tens of thousands of people. Today we’re celebrating surpassing 12k individuals in our Slack community (sign in | apply), which has been a pivotal springboard for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and friendship. We’re also launching a project on AI Companions to surface important values, tensions, tradeoffs, and best practices.
📆You’ll also read about Thursday’s livestream for former civil servants navigating their next career move, a livestream on information warfare, and our upcoming This Month in Responsible AI with guest Margaret Mitchell. We’re also announcing that Rebecca Portnoff will be speaking at our Safety by Design gathering on April 23 in NYC, and Nabiha Syed and Rumman Chowdhury will be joining our Responsible AI gathering on May 21 in NYC. An announcement about our online safety gathering in London on July 16, along with in-the-works gatherings in SF and DC are forthcoming.
Now, onto the newsletter! 👇
Let’s build a safer online experience for all
On April 23rd, our organization is holding a curated gathering across civil society, government, industry, and academia. We’re pleased to announce a panel focused around our ongoing collaboration with Thorn on reducing AI-generated harms against children, which has received public commitments from Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Google, Amazon, Anthropic, and more.
This panel will feature Dr. Rebecca Pornoff from Thorn, a trailblazing leader in child safety who was recognized by MIT Technology Review's 2024 35 under 35 innovators list. Child safety panelists from Google and Meta are being announced shortly. The conversation will be moderated by our Associate Director (and Trust & Safety lead) Sandra Khalil. Invitations will be going out later this week, so apply now if you’re like to participate.
It’s time to strengthen global collaboration in Responsible AI
On May 21st, we are holding a special curated gathering for 75 Responsible AI leaders to convene at the Finnish Consulate in New York for two panel conversations, and the Finnish Residence later in the evening for a reception. We are thrilled to announce that we will be joined by Nabiha Syed (Executive Director, Mozilla Foundation) and Dr. Rumman Chowdhury (Founder & CEO, Humane Intelligence). Nabiha was previously on our stage moderating a conversation with Frances Haugen, and Rumman has been a valued collaborator with our org.
Our panel conversations will be around “The Role of Civil Society and Research in Shaping Responsible AI Policy” and also “Aligning Transatlantic AI Governance in a Shifting Regulatory Landscape.” Invitations for this gathering will be going out next week, so apply now to attend if this is your area of focus.
Let’s talk about the thorny issues raised by AI Companions
Fresh off our recent livestream about AI Companions with guest Natalie Monbiot, our organization is setting out to fully unpack the complex ethical, legal, and emotional issues raised. To activate our community, we're hosting an invite-only brainstorming session in NYC next Wednesday. This event will be followed by an online brainstorming session and additional livestreams used to inform our next report with tips, best practices and guidance for creating responsible AI companion solutions
Do you have resources to share? Are you interested in being involved? Let us know through our interest form here.
And related to this topic, we just published an interview with Rose Guingrich, our Princeton University GradFUTURES Social Impact Fellow. Rose’s research focuses on the intersection of Psychology and Artificial Intelligence, with special attention to human-AI interaction and mind perception. Rose will be involved in our AI Companions initiative, and will be at next Wednesday’s brainstorming session in NYC.

Thursday’s livestream is designed to navigate a transition into Responsible Tech
All Tech Is Human is designed to move at the speed of tech. In times of disruption, being malleable and adaptive is essential. Right now, there are a lot of former civil servants looking to navigate their next move. Thursday’s livestream will provide insight and resources related to transitioning into Responsible Tech.
This livestream is in collaboration with our friends at New_ Public, and features Co-Director Deepti Doshi, along with Camille Stewart Gloster (Director, AI & Resilience Services, Crowdstrike) and our Siegel Research Fellow Deb Donig. The conversation will be moderated by ATIH Exec Director Rebekah Tweed.
This Month in Responsible AI
Join us on March 20th at 1pm ET for a conversation between Rebekah Tweed and special guest Margaret Mitchell (Researcher and Chief Ethics Scientist at Hugging Face) on the risks of fully autonomous agents. Your questions will be incorporated into the conversation.
They will be digging into the paper that Margaret and her Hugging Face colleagues recently released, Fully Autonomous AI Agents Should Not be Developed, as well as the talk she delivered on the paper at IASEAI 2025 in Paris adhead of the AI Action Summit.
Beautiful things happen when the community comes together in our Slack.
Here is one recent example: community member Kristin Austin recently posted an urgent note on our Slack that her host venue for “Rewriting the Code” to hold 65 college students had fallen through. The community responded in force, and the event was held at Northeastern University with a graduate school presentation, student panel, professor panel, tour, and lunch. The power of community! Here is a picture:
Let’s share another recent story: community member Oksana Kot wanted to host Barcelona’s first ATIHx gathering (independently-organized gatherings that leverage our network and amplification). Seeing this, we created a specific Barcelona channel on our Slack and ATIHx Barcelona was held last Wednesday. Oh, and since ATIH advisor Leah Ferentinos was in Spain for our project with the UNDP, she was able to take a train ride to attend!
Our Slack is also being utilized to share hundreds of job openings, get feedback on projects, and find mentorship and support. Building community is essential to tackling thorny tech & society issues, and our Slack creates that needed space.

Senior Fellow Alexis Crews at the Inaugural Political Tech Summit: The Intersection of Elections and Technology
In late January, our Resident Senior Fellow, Alexis Crews, traveled to Berlin to speak at the Inaugural Political Tech Summit, which focused on emerging political technology in Europe. The conference brought together over 500 attendees from across the continent, including technologists, politicians, and others interested in the election space.
Alexis participated in the opening panel, which explored the 2024 election landscape and the role technology played in some of the most impactful elections. You can hear some of her insights on the role of AI in elections here.
She was also interviewed by Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), Germany’s leading newspaper, about how technology leaders are increasingly engaging with authoritarianism in the U.S. and the potential global impact on the regulatory landscape. Read the full interview here. For more of Alexis’s insights on elections, click here.
